Direct Primary Care - Health care as it should be. Sit back and relax - you're covered!
We are a family medicine clinic providing a full range of care in a membership-based model known as direct primary care
Durango Primary Care is a direct primary care clinic. Direct primary care, or DPC, is an innovative way to get high personalized, quality, comprehensive healthcare for a low, flat monthly fee.
DPC doctors have left the broken healthcare system to start providing care at reasonable prices. There's no insurance, no corporate healthcare systems, no middleman. It's just doctors and patients. We can still have your insurance billed for expensive outside tests and referrals.
To be more exact, DPC is a membership model for healthcare. Every patient pays a flat monthly fee to become a member of the practice. No commitment is required. As a DPC patient, you forge a relationship with a doctor that knows you. No more scheduling months in advance; your DPC doctor is at your fingertips. If you need an in-person visit, you can usually book one the same or very next day. Email, text, or call, even after hours. Enjoy longer visits and less waiting.
This is healthcare like you've never experienced it. It's like having a doctor in the family.
We offer adult annual/wellness visits, well-child checks and women’s preventative visits with advanced laboratory, cancer and cardiac screenings. Our goal is to improve and maintain your overall health and to empower you with an understanding of your medical conditions and wellness plan.
Skip the urgent care and come to the office for same-day and next-day visits included with your membership at no extra cost. Call or text for after-hours or health problems while traveling. UTI on vacation? Get treated with a simple phone call instead of wasting your precious free time and money at an overpriced urgent care.
Chronic Disease Management
We specialize in ongoing management of chronic diseases of all types. Diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, mental health are only a few. Imagine the freedom to see your doctor quarterly, monthly, or even weekly to truly control your condition without worrying about the expensive bills that follow.
Minor surgery/in-office procedures
Suspicious skin spot? Annoying mole? We have you covered and you only have to pay the pathologist bill. We also offer:
Dr. Owens has a special interest in sports medicine and served as the team primary care doctor for Fort Lewis College athletics until 2022. Let us evaluate your injuries fully before any expensive orthopedic surgery referrals. We can also evaluate concussions to help you get recovered and back to what you love!
We don't bill insurances. Insurances will typically not reimburse patients for direct primary care costs. We accept any patients with private insurance, no insurance, or Medicare. However, due to federal and state laws, we cannot accept patients with Medicaid.
Dr. Owens has over 10 years of experience in Family Medicine. He graduated from Albany Medical College in 2011 and completed his residency in family medicine at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, CO in 2014. Since then, he has been practicing in Durango, providing high-quality adult internal medicine, pediatrics and women’s health. He also has special interest in acute/urgent care and sports medicine. Prior to founding Durango Primary Care, he served as the team primary doctor for Fort Lewis College athletics.
He is excited to work in a direct primary care setting where he can provide high-quality and personalized care for his patients without the distractions and rushed visits of a traditional primary care practice.
He lives in Durango with his wife and three boys. He volunteers coaching youth lacrosse and in his spare time enjoys biking, skiing, and fly fishing.
Bex has been working in healthcare for 10 years in a broad range of specialties. She worked as an EMT-I at the beginning of her career before she became a licensed surgical assistant. In 2016, she began working with Dr. Owens as a certified medical assistant.
She has a passion for creating personal connections with patients and making everyone feel important and valued. She is honored to be a part of the team at Durango Primary Care and is eager to prioritize patients and their needs.
Bex was born and raised in Southern California and moved to Bayfield in 2009, where she lives with her husband, their 4 children and her parents. She loves being creatively challenged and enjoys art, music, the great outdoors, and any activity that includes the whole family.
Laken started her healthcare career in 2013 with a position that focused primarily on homeopathic remedies, herbalism, and naturopathy. She then went on to earn her EMT-B and firefighting certifications to become a local volunteer which she did for many years before evolving into a full time job.
Laken now practices phlebotomy as a career and is going on to become a certified medical assistant.
Putting a smile on people’s faces is a daily goal for Laken. Always upbeat and personable, she strives to make the healthcare experience a pleasant one for everyone involved. Durango Primary Care has become a place where Laken’s big heart can express itself.
Born and raised in the Durango area, Laken is a true local. She spent some time traveling over the years but has always found her way back home. Now, home is in the mountains of Vallecito where she lives with her husband and baby girl. There is never a dull moment with 4 dogs, 2 cats, and a love for adventure.
Depending on the day, you may get to meet one or both of our well-behaved service/support animals. Nia (left) is 8 years old and Fish (right) turns one December of 2023!

Members of a DPC clinic get unlimited office visits at no additional cost. These visits can be as long as you and the doctor need. Because of the relatively small number of patients who are members of the practice, members are able to book same-day or next day appointments.
Members of Durango Primary Care will also have access to Dr. Owens after hours and on weekends through cell phone, texting or email. We will offer wholesale medications and include simple office diagnostic tests such as strep and urine testing at no additional charges.
Also, members of a DPC get to leave the confusion and often demeaning world of the corporate primary care clinic behind. No more irritating phone tree and confusing (and often large) medical bills. No more burned out doctors turning over your care to a new provider every year or so. Imagine house calls, phone check-ins and emailing your doctor. Enjoy a clinic where everyone knows who you are and treats you like family.
Lastly, you get more privacy. Your medical record, including physician’s notes are transmitted to your insurance company or Medicare so your doctor can collect a bill. Does an insurance adjuster or some government employee really need to know about every symptom you're having? In a DPC practice, there is no need to share this information with your insurance company and your personal information stays between you and your doctor.
Healthcare is surprisingly affordable once we trim the fat and stop paying insurance companies, corporate VPs, CEOs and other managers. Scroll up this page to see our monthly and annual prices. You probably spend more money on your television streaming services!
Yes! Here are some common scenarios where a direct primary care membership will save you money.
While there are similarities between a model called "concierge medicine" and DPC, the two are different in fundamental ways. Concierge practices require and bill insurance in addition to charging monthly fees. This means that they are still part of the insurance industry's complex reimbursement systems. This often results in a higher monthly fee to cover the cost of working with insurance and more confusing bills for you. Both concierge practices and DPCs offer more personalized care with more access to your doctor like longer visit times, phone and texting options.
Yes, keep in mind your DPC membership is not an insurance plan and you will still need insurance for any major health problems or hospitalizations. We are happy to take patients with any form of insurance, or none at all. The only exception is for patients with medicaid. There are certain laws that make enrolling medicaid patients difficult. These patients can reach out to the clinic to discuss options for enrollment.
Considering that, Durango Primary Care may save you money on insurance! Since all routine care is covered by your membership, you may be interested in switching to a "high-deductible" health plan that costs you less, but still keeps you from bankruptcy if you run into major medical issues.
Absolutely! Durango Primary Care aims to proactively keep you healthy, happy, and free of preventable disease. We do this by encouraging a healthy lifestyle and helping you take charge of your preventive Health Care. For our healthy patients, we are always available for treating those unavoidable acute illnesses and injuries as well.
In order to maintain a high level of patient care and access, we are going to limit the amount of patients who join the practice. Our current cap is set somewhere between 500 and 600 patients. This is far less than the 2,000-3000 patients seen in a traditional practice. It is no wonder doctors have to see patients every few minutes! Imagine having a doctor with four times the amount of time to spend on your needs as a patient! However, the practice will fill up rather quickly. We encourage interested patients to not delay and sign up today!
Are you looking to provide your company with better healthcare? Trying to offer something more to compete for the short supply of workers? Do your employees need special screening or pre-employment physicals? Dr. Owens has experience with occupational health and we are available to work directly with businesses to provide memberships as a discount. Better primary care for your employees reduces insurance utilization and can lower your insurance premiums.
